The Belgian Parliament is currently probing draft legislations with the aim to legalize same-sex adoption. In response, a group of Belgian citizens with European NGOs are organizing a big march for the family in Brussels, on Saturday September 10th 2005 at the Parc du Cinquantenaire, 2:30pm.
Belgium was the second country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2003. However, the law does not permit adoption by same-sex partners; and as birth within a same-sex marriage doesn’t imply affiliation, the same-sex spouse of the biological parent has no way to legally claim parental ‘rights’.
By revising same-sex adoption laws, the Belgian government apparently wants to follow in the footsteps of the Netherlands and of Spain. Both of these EU Member States have legalized same-sex marriage and same-sex adoption. Not only does this distort the traditional family at its core, but this implies a complete disregard for the child’s right to a mother and a father. It further rejects the mounting evidence of the adverse psychological burden imposed to a child raised by same-sex parents. This endeavor is obviously not in the best interest of the child.
Considering the unprecedented manifestation for the family in Spain last June, the organizers of this march hope to also gather a large crowd to signal that legalization of same-sex adoption should not be propagated in Belgium or in other EU Member States.
Please show your support to this great initiative to defend the family by participating in the event. Belgian residents are also invited to sign the online petition.
Spread the word to your family and friends!
